What is Spot Colour printing?
Spot colour printing is a method of printing that utilises 1 printing plate per colour. If your job contains only one colour then
only one plate is required. If it contains six colours then six plates are needed. Each plate is printed in turn with a different
colour ink, the press being totally washed down and new ink applied for each plate.
Spot colour is normally used for simpler jobs or when a special ink colour or a metallic is needed. For example, letterheads
and simple business stationery are traditionally printed spot colour
The Pantone Matching System
Pantone is the standard for matching spot colours in print. The pantone system is based upon a swatch book containing around 700
printed ink samples. Theoretically all pantone books are printed the same so if you specify a colour by looking in your pantone
book we can then match that colour on press with our pantone book. The pantone system also specifies how inks can be mixed.
Pantone books cost around £50
